Over the years “The Matrix” has been reevaluated as more than your typical blockbuster film with big explosions with a stacked cast, and more as an exploration of one's true self. With references to red pill and blue pill. The Red pill signifying Premarin which at the time was a maroon-colored tablet and used for transgender hormone therapy. With both the directors being transgender, and later confirmed by Lana Wachowski of “The Matrix” having a “trans narrative”. “The Matrix” is not only a Hollywood blockbuster, but as well as a philosophical, cultural touchstone and being one the greatest sci films ever made!

We follow Thomas Anderson who goes by his hacker alias “Neo” (Keanu Reeves). Through his daily life, he gets strange messages via chatrooms and phone calls by a mysterious figure named “Morpheus” (Lawrence Fishburne), and with the help of “Trinity” (Carrie-Anne Moss) guiding him to the truth. Telling “Neo" that the world he knows is not real, and that he lives in “The Matrix”. “Agent Smith” (Hugo Weaving) gets intel on “Neo’s” strange activities, and tries to stop him from escaping, and uncovering the truth about “The Matrix”.

After their small hit film “Bound” (1996), The Wachowski Sisters wanted to make their next film big. Thus came “The Matrix” (1999) and blew everybody's expectations when it came out. Influences from animes like “Ghost in The Shell” (1995), with its use of its dystopian cyberpunk setting, and themes. As well as martial arts films with its usage of wire work (known as wire fu) which are prevalent in Wuxia/Hong Kong films, and by hiring the legendary Chinese martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo-ping (known for works like “Drunken Master” (1978), “Fist of Legend” (1994), and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000)). Elevating fight scenes to the next level, never before seen in a major Hollywood film. “The Matrix” is also littered with philosophical themes like “what is real?”, “man vs machine”, and “fate”.
