Free concert at Grieghallen – a grand evening with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra!
Bring your student friends and experience a full symphony orchestra live at Grieghallen – featuring both contemporary music from Bergen and a milestone in music history.
The contemporary voice from Bergen
You’ve probably heard of the Bergen composer Edvard Grieg. But it’s been over 100 years since he passed away. So the question is: which Bergen composer should you check out now? The answer is Ørjan Matre.
Matre (b. 1979) has established himself as a distinct voice in Norwegian music. His compositions are known for bold instrumentation and beautiful soundscapes. He is recognized both in Norway and internationally.
From 2025 to 2027, he is the composer-in-residence with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. This means his compositions, both new and previous works, will shape the orchestra’s concert program during this period. At this concert, you’ll hear the piece preSage, written to be performed before Stravinsky’s legendary The Rite of Spring from 1913. The Financial Times described the piece as “filled with seductive sounds.”
Ørjan Matre is truly a composer with a clear contemporary voice – and this is a great opportunity to discover what that really means.
Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra
In addition to Matre’s work, the concert features Hungarian composer Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra from 1943. Bartók is considered one of the most important composers of the 20th century. He is also known for collecting and researching folk music. Edvard Grieg’s folk-inspired pieces were a major influence on him.
Bartók’s rich Concerto for Orchestra is a milestone in music history, blending classical, innovative, and Hungarian folk music sounds and colors.
The piece is a perfect introduction to classical music – showcasing the entire orchestra, section by section.
