Pop-up screening of the movie Shaft (1971)
Bergen Public Library and Winter of Soul invite you to a free pop-up screening of the iconic film Shaft (1971) — a classic that marked the beginning of the Blaxploitation era in American film history.
Directed by Gordon Parks, Shaft introduced a new kind of hero to the screen and gave voice, style, and power to Black stories during a time shaped by the Civil Rights Movement, political unrest, and cultural innovation. The film is both a historical document and a pop-cultural phenomenon — with unforgettable music, aesthetics, and attitude.
This screening serves as an introduction to the Blaxploitation program at the Winter of Soul Festival, taking place February 13–15 at Bergen International Cultural Centre.
During the festival, you can experience:
- A masterclass on Blaxploitation
- Why these films were made
- How they connect to the Civil Rights Movement
- And why they remain relevant today
The pop-up screening is open to everyone — whether you know Shaft already or are experiencing it for the first time. Welcome to film, history, and soul at the library!
