Bergen Anglican Church
Bergen Anglican Church is a congregation of the Church of England in Bergen, Norway.
Bergen's Anglican church warmly welcomes you, your
family and friends to worship and fellowship. As part of the the Diocese
of Europe in the worldwide Anglican Communion, we are an international
church community in which people from every continent and of many different
Christian traditions and denominations have found a spiritual home. We seek
to be a caring and inclusive community of faith, offering spiritual and
practical support for those living, studying and passing through
Bergen. Over the decades, the Bergen Anglican Church has become the
spiritual home for many undergraduate/graduate students and professors at UIB.
We hold English language services in Bergen's beautiful
twelfth- century stone church, Mariakirken (St. Mary's Church) at 11:00
every Sunday and coffee hour fellowship in Mariastuen afterwards
(Mariastuen can be found directly across the street and to the right with
the church image on the windows. Handicap ramp access.) We are fortunate to
hold our services in Bergen's oldest building, the beautiful stone
Mariakirken, recently renovated and centrally located in the Bergen city
center. The church is right at the end of Bryggen, the old Hansa buildings,
and by the Bryggen Museum and the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel.
Mariakirken Address: Dreggsallmenningen 15, 5003 Bergen,
Norway. A Sunday school, for children of all ages, is normally
available every Sunday. It is held in the sacristy and begins just before
the first reading. The church offers many different events throughout the
year such as a our weekly theological discussion group, an annual Lenten
study, Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper and two Services of Nine Lessons and
Carols (Korskirken and Mariakirken). The Bergen Anglican Church
embraces the long, and significant Anglican musical tradition with hymns,
organ, and occasional choral accompaniment. Mariakirken boasts a
beautiful new German Weimbs organ installed during the building's
renovation in 2015, and we have a rota of volunteer organists who accompany
our Sunday services. We also have a small a cappella choir that
sings approximately once a month during Sunday morning services. The choir
leads the congregation in a plainsong chant psalm and sings anthems by
beloved composers in the Anglican choral tradition such as Tallis, Morley,
Byrd, Purcell, Stainer, and Wood, and many others. Every Advent, the
Bergen Anglican Church offers two services of Lessons & Carols the
weekend before Christmas. The Christmas Choir is open to anyone in the
congregation and wider local community who enjoys singing and would like to
take part in this beautiful English yuletide tradition. Rehearsals are once
a week and begin in late autumn. Everyone is
welcome at the Bergen Anglican Church. Please join us!
